HIV/AIDS Peer Education at Madison Middle School

In 4th Period, 5th Period, HIV/AIDS Education on December 7, 2008 at 6:36 pm

On Friday, December 5th, 2008, a group of 25 Hialeah Gardens High School students, trained as HIV/AIDS Peer Educators made classroom presentations to the eighth grade students at Madison Middle School.

8 teams of Peer Educators, in groups of 2, 3, and 4, visited classrooms and taught lessons about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. Through engaging the middle school students in active hands-on activities, the peer educators demonstrated how HIV/AIDS may be spread and how the spread of this incurable disease may be stopped by abstaining from risky behavior such as becoming sexually active, getting tattoos and piercings, and making bad decisions that lead to regrettable outcomes and negative consequences.

The HGHS HIV/AIDS Peer Educators included 23 freshmen, and 2 sophomores—17 girls and 8 boys.

Hialeah Gardens students were heard to say that the experience was “amazing” “fun” “exciting” “awesome.” They appreciated meeting the Madison students, who were welcoming, attentive, engaged, and curious to learn facts and debunk myths about HIV/AIDS.

The HGHS Peer HIV/AIDS Educators hope to be able to visit the Madison Middle School students with more activities and information in the future.

If you were a Peer Educator or if you were a student or teacher who saw our presentations, please let us know your thoughts. We would love to hear from you.
